Best vacuum cleaner of 2019

Shark Rocket Complete HV382 Review

July 19, 2019 by cleaner

It has been quite some time since Shark Ninja have added to their line of vacuum cleaners. Therefore, the users were hoping that when they did decide to launch a new product, it would be nothing short of brilliant.

The Shark Rocket HV382 is an attempt by the company to remain relevant in a market which is very competitive. It is common knowledge that they have been trying to fend off competition from companies like Dyson.

Shark is deeming this model as their most advanced vacuum thus far. They have also stated that this model includes DuoClean technology. We shall look at what this feature means later on in the review. You can argue that Shark has always centered their products around mobility and being lightweight. This instance is no different. As a result, Shark Ninja is advertising this model as an Ultra-Light Corded Bagless vacuum.

We will examine whether Shark Rocket HV382 lives up to the billing and hype that surrounds it. We will also determine whether it is effective at Hard Floor Cleaning and on other materials such as wood or carpet.

Shark Rocket Complete HV382 Review

Shark Rocket Complete HV382 Design And Features

Here are some of the main features of the product. Shark Ninja is advertising some of these features while others are quite clearly pleasant surprises.

  • Quite light
  • Can be detached and transformed into a handheld
  • Dust canister instead of a bag
  • Dedicated motorized pet component
  • Flexible to allow for multipurpose cleaning
  • Specialized filter
  • A wire which measures over nine meters in length
  • Attached wheels for ease of movement
  • LED lights for illuminating dark areas
  • Duo Clean Technology
  • Extended warranty
  • Available in Gray/Orange

You will notice at first glance that the Shark Rocket DuoClean HV382 is quite a sleek and handsome piece of hardware. Shark Ninja has shaped the vacuum primarily like a stick with the suction port protruding out at the end. This makes sure that it covers the maximum area while vacuuming and also remains lightweight.

Shark Rocket Complete HV382 Design And Features

You can use the vacuum as a handheld device or as an upright suction machine. This points towards the flexibility incorporated in terms of the design of this model. The different attachments allow you to get to those hard to reach places and operate on differently shaped surfaces.

Shark Rocket Complete HV382 Design Specifics

Let us now go into more of the specifics of the design itself. The handle is quite thin and compact which means it is easy to grip. It also is light which makes it quite easy to move around and carry.

The canister which contains the dirt is located towards the end of the vacuum. There is a tiny door where you can open it from to empty out its contents. The size of the canister itself is rather small. Therefore you may have to release the dirty after each cleaning session. The location of the cartridge also means that you will have to empty it by lifting the entire machine above the dust bin.

The vacuum is not cordless, and so, it has a long wire that powers it. This can be either a good or bad feature depending on your preference and requirement. You would ideally want a vacuum with constant power if you are going on a long cleaning spree and the cord fulfills that demand.

On the other hand, if you prefer mobility, you will want a cordless vacuum. Therefore, it is safe to say that Shark has designed this vacuum keeping in mind the requirements of the gleeful cleaner.

The fact that the vacuum has a power on and power off button further proves this fact. Clicking it once will enable the suction and pressing it again will turn it off. This is a little different from specific other lightweight models which have a trigger button which needs to be continuously pushed.

Pros & Cons

The following is an extensive but not exhaustive list of pros of cons. We have gathered them through our testing as well as compiling a list of reviews by other owners. We then selected the most commonly reported benefits and shortfalls of the products.

Pros

  • Effective Suction
  • Able to be used on a variety of surfaces.
  • Can be used in multiple forms
  • Flexible Design
  • Relatively quiet performance
  • Noticeably lengthy wire
  • Cleanable Filters
  • Additional tools and attachments included.

Cons

  • Slightly bulky in terms of size for a handheld vacuum
  • Constricted dust container and so, it has to be cleaned after every session
  • Can be used in an upright position, but will not stand in that manner
  • Noticeable lack of a HEPA filter

Pros Explained

The owners of this device have repeatedly praised the suction power of this unit similar to that of the Shark Rotator Pro Lift-Away vacuum. This was a noticeable trend when we were scouring through amateur user reviews. We can confirm that this appraisal is purely on merit. We have noticed that it can pull up dust and debris of almost any size, shape and texture. Moreover, it is effective equally on virtually all types of surfaces. Dare we say it, it might even be more potent than some of the larger units currently being produced by Shark’s competitors.

We also found the maintenance to be relatively easy, not to mention quite cheap. You can easily wash the vacuum's filters without worrying for any potential damage and this makes maintenance easier. Furthermore, the electric rollers that are part of the package also make cleaning the filters an easier task.

SharkNinja have designed the Shark Rocket HV382 in such a manner that its maneuverability is unparalleled. The swivel steering will enable you to alter the way the nozzle is facing with a simple flick of the wrist. You can even lay the vacuum flat on its back in order to reach under narrow crevices and low lying furniture.

Shark Rocket Complete HV382 pros cons

Cons Explained

However, not all is perfect with the Shark Rocket HV382. We found the lack of stability to be somewhat problematic. What we mean to say is, the stick vacuum refuses to stay upright on its own unless we lean it against some surface. You might not find this deficiency shocking, but it is certainly not ideal, considering how the Shark designed the HV382. SharkNinja have tried to circumvent this issue via other features, to their credit. But it remains to be seen whether their efforts have been successful in this aspect.

Another very prominent beef that users and ourselves have with the Shark Rocket HV382 is that it is somewhat on the heavier side. This may vary from user to user. Our staff proved this fact as some of them found it to be quiet light while quite a few others found it to be bulky and heavy. Therefore, it could have been a little less fat especially as the stick vacuum is advertised as lightweight and above all, a handheld model.

Usability

You may be glad to know that the Shark Rocket HV382 prides itself on being a pet owner’s friend. This means that it is very efficient at cleaning up your pet’s hair. However, certain people have complained that it does get clogged in the brush roll occasionally. This could be due to the state of the brush rolls or more likely; the reason could be the extended length of the hair.

Regardless, the Shark Rocket comes equipped with a solution. Shark Ninja have made a nifty little hair removal tool that they have placed under the brush roll panel. This, in essence, is value addition and is something to be appreciated.

The Shark Rocket HV382 comes equipped with two suction choices. A trigger allows you to choose either mode at will while you are cleaning. The first mode perhaps gives out less suction and so, is used on delicate or intricate surfaces.

It is primarily for use on plain floor where dirt and debris can be sucked off easily. We shall describe this mode as the power efficient mode on the HV382.

The second mode gives out more power and turns on the brush roll which is located at the bottom of the stick vacuum. This allows the vacuum to perform deeper cleaning. This, in essence, is the Duo Clean technology that we were mentioning earlier on in the review. It will enable the vacuum to deliver its signature Triple Particle Cleaning. We feel that this is just a fancier way of describing stronger cleaning through two brushes performing concurrently.

Cord Issues

The cord might act as an annoying obstacle for some. However, you will never run out of power, unlike the handheld vacuums. Furthermore, the wire itself is quite long. Therefore, it should not impede your movement. The thirty-foot range of the cable means that you can easily clean a sizeable room or even multiple spaces without needing to unplug and re-plug the device repeatedly.

The manufacturers have also tried to decrease the annoyance of the wire by giving multiple ways to coil or store the cord. You can store the cable after detaching the hand held part and then latching it at the bottom of the extension tube area which is located beside the floor nozzle. Alternatively, you can retract the wire back towards the wall dock.

However, you may have issues fixing certain attachments onto the Shark Rocket if you do choose to retract the wire into the wall dock. This because if you intend on setting the cord with the Shark Rocket back in the designated dock, you will have to use the extension tube.

Attachments

Shark Rocket Complete HV382 attachments

On the bright side, the attachments themselves are quite handy when you know how to use them. First of all, you will have to attach the extension tube. This will allow you to then latch on different attachments such as the pet upholstery tool, Car Detail Set (HV302), floor nozzle and crevice tool. This is similar to the Shark Rotator Pro Lift-Away vacuum which also came with a vast array of different nifty tools.

Dust Canister

Obviously, the filter and the dust container feature heavily when we are trying to evaluate the usability of a vacuum. We have already highlighted the fact that the filters can be cleaned with water and so, this is a significant plus point. We have also mentioned the fact that the dust canister will be emptied via a door located almost at the bottom.

The door swings open relatively easily with the click of a button. Be sure to position the vacuum carefully so that the canister’s contents don’t come spilling out on you. The size of the Shark Rocket HV382 can potentially make the emptying of the container a little difficult, but it is most certainly not a deal breaker by any means.

Performance

We can go on and on about the features, design and power of the vacuum. But how does it actually perform? Does it do what we ask it to? We shed light on the same through simple performance tests.

Bare Floors

The Shark Rocket HV382 lived up to its hype in test on bare floors. Initially, we were expressing concern that the roller at the front may result in the spread of some debris. It was indeed a pleasant surprise to find out that we were wrong. In fact, it aided with comfortable movement of the vacuum and made quick work of any annoying debris that may have gotten stuck otherwise.

Carpet

The performance of the vacuum on carpet was also admirable. It was easily sucking up debris although to be fair, they were lying on the top surface of the carpet. That is to say, they had not been pressed in deep. A positive observation is that the spout in the front is positioned in a manner that it does not push sizeable debris onwards along with the vacuum itself.

However, we did notice that the spout was gently pulling the entire vacuum forwards due to the suction.

On the face of things, that does not appear to be a problem when you are moving forwards. Regardless, it did take a bit of extra effort to pull the vacuum back.

General Testing

Shark Rocket Complete HV382 general testing

We also have to point out that the HV382’s front spout was not optimally effective for larger debris such as cereal. Our observation suggests that the spout’s opening may be a little narrow as the suction power seemed quite adequate.

We used the relevant attachment to increase the spout covered area and it quickly took care of the cereal/large debris issue as well.

Human hair is often problematic for any type of vacuum if it is tangling to the texture of the surface it is on. This also proved to be the case with the Shark Rocket HV382 as it was able to suck up around half of the hair while the remaining got stuck to the front brush. We were able to clean the brush with relative ease, but it was still painstaking work as we were lifting the vacuum laterally to clean it.

However, do not let this be the deciding factor when you are considering the HV382 for purchase. This is because most handheld vacuums struggle to perform when it comes to human hair.

We also spread around metallic objects such as nuts and bolts to see how the vacuum performed. We did not do this to test the suction of the vacuum with regards to metallic objects. Rather, we did it to check the durability of the rollers and whether a hard metallic object would damage the brushes.

We are pleased to state that the unit was able to withstand the metallic debris although it did somewhat struggle to suck it up.

Maintenance and Support

The biggest ease in the maintenance aspect of the vacuum has already been highlighted multiple times in this review. SharkNinja have created washable filters and so, all three of the DuoClean filters can perform admirably without the need for replacement.

Rocket’s support is primarily web and telephone-based. Therefore, they do not have physical customer care centers for facilitating warranty claims and the repair of damaged units.

This is somewhat cumbersome, but the manufacturer does try to make up for it by offering a five year warranty as opposed to the market standard two year warranty.

Additionally, their page also has a dedicated section for ordering spare parts for repairs and maintenance. To this effect, we would recommend periodic maintenance of the vacuum and regular cleaning of the filters to avoid unnecessary hitches. This is because the Shark Rocket HV382 is a solid model which should perform well over a decent period of time if kept properly.

Conclusion

The Shark Rocket is a viable and efficient alternative to quite a few competitor’s products available in the market. The variety of attachments available with the unit makes purchase of this model a very attractive proposition. It is also quite straightforward to put together the vacuum when you buy it.

There are a few drawbacks such as the bulkiness, storing of the wire, lack of HEPA filters and its failure to stay upright. However, Shark Ninja have clearly created a product whose pros outweigh the cons. Therefore, none of the flaws are deal breakers and so, it is an investment worth making.

Usability

The Shark Navigator Freestyle SV1106 can be used on both bare floors and carpets. For those who are just starting out with using a stick cordless vacuum, you can easily master this as it only has two speed settings. You can simply switch in between these settings by pushing a button.

On another note, this is very easy to wield because it is lightweight. Even though it cannot be used as a handheld vacuum, you can still use this in hard to reach areas because of its swiveling head. Its extra large dust cup capacity can also help you to clean more efficiently as you do not have to stop in between cleaning because it can accommodate a lot of dust, dirt, and other debris.

In the event that you need to empty out the dust, it is also not much of a hassle. This is the case because you only need to take it out with just a push of the button. You are also assured that dust will not escape because of the filters in the vacuum.

Performance

This cordless bagless vacuum for carpet and bare floors have such a strong suction that you only need to go over an area one time. But keep in mind that even though it has a brush, it is still not suited for deep cleaning. Therefore, if you have thick carpets, it is best to go over it another time to ensure that you get everything out.

For those who only have bare floors and are worried that this might scratch the surface, you do not have to worry anymore because this has rubberized wheels that cannot scratch the floor. At the same time, these wheels can easily turn without gripping the surface. In turn, you do not have to exert much pressure against it for it to move in the way that you like.

In terms of its running time, you can pretty much get a lot out of the four to seven hours of charging time. It does however run longer when you are working on bare floors as opposed to carpeted floors. But you are assured that you will not run out of charge while you are in the middle of the cleaning process.

Is the Shark Navigator Lifestyle Upright Vacuum for You

More than that, you do not have to worry about overcharging it. It has a feature that automatically stops the charging time when it is already at a full charge. In this way, you can just leave it in its charging hub even though you are not using it. This will also not harm the integrity of your battery. You are also assured that you always have a fully charged vacuum whenever you use it.

For those who are interested in pet hair removal, the use of this vacuum cleaner will delight you. It can efficiently get rid of pet hair, but you have to be mindful of hair clumps. These might gather on the motorized brush which can lessen the performance of the vacuum. You can easily avert this by using a pair of scissors to cut the clumps on the brush and crank the vacuum up so it can process the hair on the brush.

Support and Maintenance

This one has a limited one year warranty. With that said, it can be pretty tricky to get it replaced or repaired. This is the case because the warranty only applies to manufacturer defects and the likes. If you break it, there is no guarantee that yours will be replaced or repaired. This is definitely the downside of this product.

At the same time, the warranty covers non-durable parts. This is also a letdown because they did not specify which parts are those. Logic dictates that this category includes filters, motorized brush, and the battery. However, it is still up to them to decide if those can be replaced.

In terms of maintaining the cleanliness of the filters, it is pretty simple. First off, you have to press a button to remove the dirt cup. Then, you can push a lever to open the dirt cup so you can empty it. The mesh filter can be checked from there. You can also remove the foam filter and wash it under running water.

It is also simple to clean the neck of the vacuum cleaner or the air hose. All you have to do is to remove the floor nozzle. You can then flip back its connector so you can straighten the air hose or air passage. From there, you can remove any debris or hair that got stuck. Just make sure to not use any sharp objects that might damage the hose as that will affect the validity of the warranty.

Let us now talk about customer support, they do have a hotline and an email address that you can contact. However, they do not offer 24/7 customer assistance. You might also find that they reply quite slow to queries, so if you need to have an answer ASAP, you will be disappointed. On another note, they do reply eventually and they can detail the troubleshooting that you can do to fix any problems.

Is the Shark Navigator Lifestyle Upright Vacuum for You?

This is for you if you are not a fan of deep cleaning. This in itself is not really an advantage because it simply means that you get to use it more often compared to another cordless bagless vacuum for carpet, so there is really no need to do deep cleans. If you are someone who values fast and efficient cleaning, this is the vacuum cleaner for you.

At the same time, if you live alone and have pets, this will be perfect. Not only can it get rid of pet hairs but it also has the tendency to be noisy. Therefore, if you have a lot of household members, children, or babies, they might find it very annoying while you are using this.

As for the type of floor that this works best, it is great on bare floors. Of course, that does not mean that it does not perform well on carpets, but it simply means that you will have a more efficient cleaning experience with bare floors.

This is the case because the running time is longer on bare floors compared to carpets. You can still use it on carpets, but you will notice that there is still a slight resistance against the carpet. Which in turn can make you exert more effort, compared to just using it on bare floors.

Conclusion

The Shark Navigator Freestyle Upright SV1106 which is a cordless bagless vacuum for carpet is a good choice for everyday cleaning. It has very simple yet sophisticated features that anyone can truly appreciate. You can save time and effort in cleaning with the use of this vacuum cleaner which is what we all strive for, right?

On the other hand, it does have certain disadvantages to it that might prove to be a hassle in terms of maintenance. One of which is the fact that the coverage of the one-year limited warranty is not that clear. Also, you have to make sure that no one is around when using this because it might prove to be a nuisance. Therefore, this product is not really recommended for those who live in condominiums and apartments.

How to Apply and Remove Polyurethane on Hardwood Floors

May 20, 2017 by cleaner

Renewing polyurethane protects hardwood floors and gives them a gloss finish. Additionally, polyurethane does a good job sealing and protecting the hardwood from scratches and spills.

In spite of these attractive qualities of polyurethane, the process of applying and removing polyurethane can be difficult. Without professional assistance, you are going to require all the help you can get.

Are you planning to apply or remove polyurethane on your own?

hardwood floor

If the answer is yes, then buckle up your belt because the successful completion of the process requires a lot of patience. You will also need to put in place a few necessary precautionary measures.

The level of preparation depends on the size of the floor. Covering a substantial amount of space will require between twenty-four hours before you apply the polyurethane. On the other hand, you will need a few days to enable curing to take place properly.

Luckily, there are tips you can follow to apply polyurethane to your hardwood floor expertly.

Requited Items When Applying Or Removing Polyrethane From Hardwood Floors

Here is an exhaustive list of the items you are going to need:

- Polyurethane

- Scuff sand

- Orbital sander

- Paint tray

- Lamb’s wool paint roller

- 220-grit sandpaper

- Some mineral spirits

- Strippers

- Rubber gloves

- Metal scraper

- Eye protection goggles, and finally

- A vapour respirator.

In the next section, we enlist the best steps to follow to achieve perfect results when applying polyurethane on a hardwood floor.

List of Steps

Like all other home improvement exercises, we cannot stress enough the significance of adequate preparation.

The hardwood floor has to remain clean the entire time. It should also be completely free of dust.

The first step would be preparing the hardwood floor by stripping it of all covering. We recommend that you safely remove old coats of polyurethane by following tips for polyurethane removal in the following section.

The need to get back to a bare floor may necessitate the need to use an orbital sander. Recently installed floors will only require thorough scuff sanding before the application of polyurethane.

In the final step, we highly recommend that you use a vacuum cleaner to remove all the dust. Then follow up with a rag and preferred mineral spirits to finish the preparation process.

Precautions

Polyurethanes produce fumes poisonous to humans, irrespective of whether their main component is oil or water. It is, therefore, prudent to take proper safety measures.

Ensure appropriate ventilation aimed at removing toxic fumes is vital. Consequently, all windows should be kept open throughout the process of applying polyurethane to the hardwood floors.

An electric fan is quite efficient at removing fumes from a room. Additionally, we recommend that one wears a vapour respirator when handling polyurethane.

Polyurethane

Application of Polyurethane

Steps to Follow

1. Ensure you properly stir the polyurethane before transferring some into a paint tray. To thinly and evenly apply polyurethane, use a lamb’s wool paint roller.

2. You should then proceed to apply polyurethane from the furthest corner of the room. Slowly and deliberately move towards the main exit as you apply.

3. Methodically use the roller on the hardwood floor. Ensuring you cover every inch of the floor. Avoid the areas you have already covered.

When done, you are advised to wait between four and eight hours. So the coat dries up.

1. Upon drying, the next step involves lightly sanding down the initial coat using 220-grit sandpaper. During sanding, take care that you sand in the same direction as the graining of the wood.

2. Afterward, use a rag and some mineral spirits to remove all traces of dust.

3. The subsequent layer of coat requires mixing polyurethane and mineral spirits in the ratio of ten to one. The aim is to achieve a thinner coat of polyurethane, making it easier for the dissipation of any resultant bubbles.

4. This subsequent coat of applying polyurethane to the hardwood floor should follow the same procedure as the first layer. As was the case with the first layer, the following steps are drying and sanding, and the processes are similar to the first step.

After allowing for the recommended drying time, proceed to apply a third coat of diluted polyurethane. However, sanding is not necessary at this stage.

Allow at least 24 hours before stepping on the floor and another 72 hours before furnishing. Maintain proper ventilation throughout this duration.

Removing Polyurethane from Hardwood Floors

Polyurethane is renowned for protecting and giving hardwood floor a gloss finish. Like all coats, however, it ages with time and will need to be removed and replaced with a new one.

The next sections deal with the best steps to follow when removing polyurethane from a hardwood floor.

Preparation

Chemical based strippers are the most efficient in removing polyurethane from a hardwood floor. Compared to methylene chloride based strippers, water based strippers come in a wide variety.

Because they produce fewer fumes, they are less harmful to humans. However, they are not fast at stripping polyurethane from hardwood floors.

To avoid damaging your furniture and rugs, you need to clear the floor of all items and ensure all windows remain open. You can further ventilate the room by using an electric fan.

Precautionary Steps

You need to observe all necessary precautions considering the toxicity and acidity of polyurethane stripper.

As already stated, opening all windows and using an electric fan is highly advised. Other vital gears are rubber gloves, eye protection goggles, in addition to a vapor respirator.

You also consider protecting your skin from splashes by wearing a long-sleeved shirt and long pants.

Stripping Polyurethane

Use a paint brush to apply the stripper all over the floor generously.

Allow it few moments to soak. The reaction between the polyurethane and the stripper will soften the coat and lift it off the floor. You can use a metal scraper to scrape the polyurethane from the top of the hardwood.

A second attempt may be necessary depending on the level of success of the initial attempt.

Sanding the Hardwood Floor

Upon removing the polyurethane, your next step is sanding the whole floor to reveal the origin texture and color of the hardwood.

From here the wood is ready for anything. You can stain, seal, or apply a fresh coat of polyurethane to it.

Strictly following the steps of applying and removing the polyurethane can save you pretty sum in expenses. By following these measures, you can use polyurethane to give your hardwood a gloss finish.

When polyurethane ages, the removal steps can equally come in handy.

Cleaning your house is a chore in of itself, no use making it more difficult with the wrong vacuum. What you need to remember is to balance out weight and clearing path. These are the 2 main concerns when picking up a vacuum. The type of vacuum comes into play in relation to the area that you need cleaning.

That being said, let’s look at these vacuums in more detail and learn more about them.

1. Shark Navigator NV356E - Best Under $200

One of the things that will stand out right off the bat with this one is the more traditional shape. It is reminiscent of upright vacuum cleaners of old, with a small twist.

This one is able to reach better performance levels than its predecessors.

It sports a 2-in-1 design that allows it to split into different vacuum cleaners. You have the default upright model for cleaning hardwood floors, a carpet and soft wood floors. You also have the option to convert it into a small canister vacuum.

This is great for cleaning hard to reach areas where dust usually gathers. It is also great vacuum cleaner for when steam cleaning a carpet.

Another thing to note about this upright vacuum cleaner is that it is also great for pets dander. Not all vacuums are able to manage it, but this one sports a HEPA filter that traps the particles.

This makes this vacuum cleaner great for people struggling with allergies.

Type: Upright vacuum

One more thing worth mentioning here is that is comes with quite a few cloths and attachments. They are all made out of microfiber material. This is the same kind of material that lens wipes are made out of. The cloths are intended to protect hardwood floors while vacuuming and dusting them.

The vacuum cleaner does not pack an actual dust bag, but rather a dust canister. This makes it a lot easier to dump and clean. It also makes it slightly lighter and easy to manager, not having to worry about the extra dust bag. Not to mention the fact that the user can attach a dust bag if he so desires.

Something else that you will notice is the fact that it comes with a pivoting joints. Not many upright vacuums have these pivoting joints. This joint allows for more comfortable turning while cleaning without loosing suction power.

The only actual downside that this vacuum cleaner has is the fact that filter needs regular changing. Unlike other vacuum cleaners, the upright vacuums tend to clog up faster. This one is no exception and the filter needs changing quite regularly.

Pros
  • Very maneuverable
  • Sports a 2 in 1 design
  • Very easy to use for upright vacuums
Cons
  • 2-speed brush doesn’t shut off: this may scratch hardwood floors
  • Canister might not fit every dust bag format
  • The filter requires regular changing
  • Storage can be an issue because of the bulky head

2. Hoover Linx BH50010 - Best Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner

One of the more technologically inclined vacuum cleaners on the market, it gained a lot of popularity with its review.

The Hoover Linx is a stick vacuum cleaner for both carpet and wood floors. The best thing about it is the sleek and modern design that it has going for it. The motor and the dust canister are at the back and are transparent. This makes you see when the dust canister fills up and needs to be emptied.

Another great thing is the fact that it has rechargeable batteries. This makes it possible to vacuum wood floors and clean a carpet without having to plug it into the wall. Not to mention the fact that it does not lose suction power like other cordless vacuums do. It manages to retain its suction power regardless of the mode that it is running in.

One more thing to note about this stick vacuum cleaner is the fact that it does not handle steam cleaning well. This might be a problem for you if you are into steam cleaning your hardwood floors or carpeting.

The head itself cannot take the heat and moisture too well and cam cause the motor to clog.

Type: Stick vacuum

This in turn not only diminishes its suction power but also nullifies its features.

One of the better features that this unit brings to the table is that it’s built with wind tunnel technology. This makes the interior design help the motor itself, boosting its suction power. This, in turn, makes this vacuum cleaner able to suck out some of the more problematic particles. It also helps it reach some of the deeper hardwood floor and carpeting levels. So much so that the wood floors themselves tend to create suction surfaces for it.

Something interesting that you will find on this vacuum cleaner is a neat little fuel gauge. This was included mostly for when it is used with its batteries. It helps the user get a more accurate reading of its energy levels.

Pros
  • A lot of suction power
  • Easy to handle
  • Can be used on batteries
Cons
  • Does not handle steam cleaning well
  • Can be tedious to open and clean
  • Not as much storage volume as canister vacuums

3. Miele S2121 Olympus - Best Canister Vacuum for Hardwood Floor

When it comes to canister vacuums, this one comes out on top of them. While canister vacuums are preferred for wood floors and carpets, they are also preferred for their suction power.

The Mielle S2121 Olympus is the strongest among canister vacuums in regards to suction power. In a review it was mentioned as being strong enough to suck the carpet off of the wood floors. Besides its suction power, it is able to bring a lot of features to the table.

First off, its design is simple and elegant, able to fit with the aesthetic of any room with wood floors. It is easy to control and maneuver, sporting a simple and intuitive user interface.

Something worth noting is the fact that the overall profile of the Miele canister vacuums is a bit lower. This makes them a lot more easy to deposit and transport. The same goes with this one, however it is still spatious enough to fit a respectable dust bag.

Another one of the features that it brings to the table is the air clean filter. This is great for people with pets and allergies to pets dander.

Weight: 13 pounds

Clearing path: 9.5 inches

Type: Canister vacuum

It is basically a very dense microfiber filter that is able to filter out allergens and particles.

It does this without affecting the overall airflow. This means that you can still vacuum your wood floors while the filter does its job.

Another one of its great features is the fact that it is very lightweight when compared to other canister vacuums. This makes it a lot easier to use around the house as well as delicate with wood floors. The risk of scratching your wood floors is a lot lower with light canister vacuums.

The only downside to this vacuum cleaner is the dust bag itself. While, like all canister vacuums, it has the dust bag located at the front, its space is a bit small. This means that despite the volume of the dust bag, it fills up slightly faster than other canister vacuums.

Pros
  • Very lightweight
  • Simple features that make the difference
  • A lot easier to use than other canister vacuums
Cons
  • The dust bag is not as expansive as in other vacuums
  • The unit itself is difficult to store away properly
  • The head requires regular cleaning

4. Hoover FloorMate FH40010B - Best Corded Bare Floor Cleaner

This one stands out amongst upright vacuums because of its features. While it might not seem like it, this is one of the best upright vacuums for steam cleaning. It is also a great choice for people that own pets or struggle with pets dander.

Right out of the bag, you’ll notice an interesting and elegant see-through design. This is to help the user see if the dust canister is full as well as if the motor is running properly. It also helps judge whether or not the filter is full of pets dander or other particles. Overall this is the kind of design that saves you a lot of time in the long run. Opening upright vacuums up can be a bit of a tedious job.

One of the more interesting features that this vacuum brings is the addition of SpinScrub Brushes. These are small scrubs that rotate under the suction head. This makes it possible to delve deep into the carpet fibers and loosen up any particles or pets dander.

Another one of its features is the fact that you can actually choose between 3 stages of vacuuming. This is based on environmental conditions, such as how many pets you own and how deep your carpet is. It this is also among the features that are great for wood floors.

The suction head being angled in such a way that it allows it to pull in dust from wide angles.

Probably the most popular of features is the fact that it can actually scrub the wood floors as you vacuum. It even has small tanks in which you can put water and detergent to help make things easier. This is great for when you have pets and you need to clean their tracks off the wood floors.

The last thing to note about this vacuum cleaner is the fact that it is not very friendly to new users. While it does have a lot of useful features, it tends to overwhelm beginners. Not to mention the fact that it is easy to mess up if you use the wrong features at the wrong time.

Overall it does take some time to get used to its features, but it’s worth it. It can deliver great cleaning results, especially on wood floors.

Pros
  • Has a lot of overwhelming features
  • Great for people with pets or allergies to pets dander
  • One of the most powerful upright vacuums
Cons
  • Has a lot of overwhelming features
  • Can be difficult to grasp by a beginner
  • Can cause problems if the wrong features are used at the wrong time

5. Bissell PowerEdge Pet 81L2A - Best Pet Hard Floor Corded Vacuum

Something that will strike you as odd right off the bat is the design of this vacuum cleaner. While it is a great vacuum cleaner for your home, it also sports a lot of power. Not to mention the fact that the head is shaped like a “V”. While these are not ordinarily encountered in home vacuum cleaners, they serve a good purpose.

First off, the V shaped head is there to help you reach hard to reach places. This includes odd angles, areas under your furniture and even deep corners.

A great asset to have in every home, especially a home with pets.

Another thing to mention is the enormous amount of power that it packs. This is due to the motor that it features, which allows it to clean even the deepest carpet out there. This even includes low pile area rugs and shag carpeting.

By default it was designed for wood floors and hardwood floors, however it has some accessories to boot.

Things like extra filtration options, brushes and cloths are also available for this vacuum cleaner.

Another thing to mention about this unit is the swivel head that it sports. A very useful feature for home use, especially around a lot of furniture and carpeting. This overall makes it a lot easier to use and a lot more pleasant to vacuum your home.

One last thing to mention in regards to its features is the fact that it makes emptying easy. This is because it sports not a bag nor canister, but a dirt cup. While a bit smaller, it is great for home use, helping you emptying and cleaning it up much faster.

Something worth noting here is the fact that this vacuum cleaner does have a drawback. Namely with the “V” shaped head. Because of the shape, while it is great for home use, it is not great for industrial or office use. This is because it requires the user to swivel and rotate it around a lot. It’s a requirement if you want it to cover large open areas and open spaces.

Pros
  • One of the best stick vacuums for home use
  • V shaped head helps with vacuuming around furniture
  • Easy to clean and easy to empty
Cons
  • Does not do so well in office and industrial environments
  • Can be difficult to store at home

6. Bissell Pet Hair Eraser 33A1 - Best Handheld Vacuum Under $100

Handheld vacuums have been around for quite some time now. While they do have some drawbacks, Bissett vacuums manage to overcome their challenges.

This little handheld vacuum is a great example of a proper home portable vacuum. Not to mention the fact that it is great for hardwood floors as well.

Something that will strike you as odd form the very beginning is its head. This vacuum does not use the standard brushes and plastic heads that we are used to. In fact, it uses rubber nozzles as suction heads.

This is great, especially for home users. This is because with standard head, the risk of scratches and damage was rather high. With rubber nozzles, on the other hand, cleaning your home is a lot safer.

While it is not meant for large scale vacuuming, it is still great to have and use around the home. This is because it is able to get into those tight places and hard o reach angles. Not to mention the fact that it is able to clean messes that regular vacuums cannot.

Although it has a relatively small size, it does not lack suction power. In fact, it packs enough power to be used in your car, office and garage if you desire. Home users, on the other hand, will benefit the most from its features.

The thing that not many people realize is the fact that this unit also packs a powerful filter. The filtration is done using a dense microfiber filter, almost as strong as a HEPA filter. This makes things like pets dander and other allergens and particles not be an issue.

Another thing to mention about the actual filter is the fact that it can also be washed. A lot of vacuum cleaners use filters that can only be removed and replaced. The Bissell vacuum uses a filter that can be removed, washed and placed back after drying. This actually saves you a bit of money in the long run.

The only gripe that people had with it when writing its review was that it was a too small. This meant that it was easy to loose and hard to notice in the right situations. Not to mention the fact that although it comes with different nozzles, they are easy to misplace.

All in all, this little vacuum cleaner is a great addition for your home.

Pros
  • Very light
  • Comes with different nozzles for different surfaces
  • Is able to put out a lot of power
Cons
  • Some people found it to be too small
  • The nozzle heads can be easily misplaced
  • It tends to fill up quite fast and requires a lot of emptying.

7. Eureka Mighty Mite 3670G - Best Corded Canister Vacuum

Canister vacuum cleaners are rather popular, especially with home users. This one, however, stands out at bit because of its design and features.

The Eureka Mighty Mite is a more oddly designed vacuum cleaner. Although it was clearly designed for home use, it sports a more industrial design. While it might seem a bit odd, it has some functionality behind it.

It actually has 2 openings, one on each end in which you can fit the hose. This, while interesting, makes it a bit more versatile in the average home. Not to mention the fact that it works well in home annexes like a garage or a study.

It’s worth noting that the second hole is not for suction, but for blowing. This makes it easier to perform tasks like blowing leaves off of your lawn.

Another interesting thing is the filter that it uses. While other canister vacuums use an interior filter, this one uses an exterior one. The filter is placed snuggly over the external air intake, making it suck the allergens that are floating around it.

One more thing to note about the filter is the fact that, while external, it is washable. Simply pop the filter off, give it a good rinse in the sink and let it dry. Just pop the filter back in afterwards and you’re good to go.

There is a bit of a downside to this vacuum cleaner though. While it is a nice one to have around the home, it’s main focus is hardwood floors and carpeting. That being said, it performs a bit sub-par on other flooring surfaces.

Something worth adding about the vacuum cleaner is the fact that it can be fitted with a lot of accessories. Anything from brushes to rollers, even leather padding for those very demanding home surfaces. It even has 3 accessories for carpeting alone to help you clean it properly.

All in all, it is a great vacuum to have around the house, especially if it involves a lot of carpeting.

Pros
  • Great for carpet and hardwood cleaning
  • Has blowing capabilities as well
  • Washable filter
Cons
  • Difficult to clean
  • Can pose a challenge with home storage

8. iRobot Mint 4200 - Perfect for Hard Floor Cleaner

Robotic vacuum cleaners are not all that frequently encountered in homes. The ones that are encountered, always have a lot of pitfalls. This one, on the other hand, has been appreciated by everyone that wrote it a review.

First and foremost, this little robot is great for hardwood floors and a very thin carpet. It also sports a nice little dust rag which it drags around, cleaning the finer particles off the floor.

Something more interesting is the fact that it uses North Star Navigation System. This helps is find its way around a room and cover as much surface area as possible. It manages to find its way without too many bumps and scrapes. Not to mention the fact that its square shape is great for corners and difficult to reach areas.

Another thing to mention is the fact that it runs in a whisper-quiet operation mode, turning itself off once the cleaning is done. Again, the navigation system helps it map out the room and figure out when it finished covering it.

Type: Robotic vacuum

It is also a low maintenance unit, often referred to as a fire and forget robot. Simply plop it down, turn it on and let it do it’s job.

The good thing about it is the fact that it runs on internal rechargeable batteries. These batteries are able to hold a charge that gives it up to 3 hours of functional cleaning time. All in all this is a decent time frame considering the fact that it does not take long to charge.

One last thing to mention is the fact that this is a low maintenance unit. It does not require much attention. All you have to do is check its microfiber cloth are replace it every once in a while. There are no filters, no bags and no bins to check.

The only actual problem with this unit is how it handles on a carpet. While it can clean a thin carpet, it has trouble dealing with thicker ones. This should not be that big of an issue, considering the fact that it was designed for hard surfaces. Cleaning a carpet was not in the original plan to begin with.

Pros
  • Very quiet
  • Low maintenance
  • Perfect for cleaning hardwood floors
Cons
  • Relies heavily on microfiber cloths
  • Does not do well on a carpet

9. Dirt Devil Simpli-Stik SD20000RED

While it might sound like a stunt vacuum cleaner, it is actually a great addition for a home. Mainly because of the fact that it brings a lot of versatility to the table.

The Dirt Devil Simpli-Stik is a stick vacuum cleaner with a twist. While other stick vacuums can be modified ti have smaller openings, this one can turn into a handheld. While slightly amusing, it can also be very useful and versatile.

Especially when you don’t feel like taking out the whole unit for a small mess.

While it can be disassembled and used as a handheld vacuum, it has some extra features going for it. First of all, it is the lightest on our list.

Despite the fact that it is a stick vacuum, it weighs less than a handheld unit. This is because it is made out of very lightweight materials.

This makes it perfect for delicate surfaces like hardwood floors.

While the risk of scratching will always be there, it is a lot smaller with this unit.

Another thing to note here is the fact that it also sports a 1.25 amp motor. This gives it enough power to clear any mess it encounters without loosing suction power. While this motor proves to be strong as a stick vacuum, it feel stronger as a handheld. That being said, there is no mess that this unit cannot handle.

One more thing to note here is that the motor is powerful enough do clean a carpet at deep levels.

The only letdown that this vacuum has is the fact that the dust bag is rather small, While not as voluminous as other dust bags, it is still good for home cleaning.

Pros
  • Can turn into a handheld
  • Very easy to use
  • Very powerful motor
Cons
  • Slightly smaller dust bag
  • Can be difficult to replace filters

10. Hoover Linx SH20030

While there are a lot of stick vacuums on the market, this one manages to stand out. The fact that it is from Hoover makes all that much interesting to begin with.

The first thing that you will notice is th fact that it sports a very pleasant and modern design. This design makes it possible for the user to see right through it and into the dust bin and motor. Which makes it easier to figure out when it is time to empty it.

One of the great features that it has is the Powered Brushroll with Cyclonic Technology. This gives this cleaner increased cleaning capabilities. Not to mention the fact that the brush itself is soft enough to not scratch the floor.

Another great thing to note about this cleaner is the fact that the handle has an extreme reclining angle. While this might not seem like such a big deal, it actually gives it a lot more versatility. When combined with the already low profile that it sports, it allows it to reach further under furniture.

Something else to note about this vacuum cleaner is the fact that it has a lot of suction power. This makes it possible for it to handle dense shag carpeting at very deep levels.
